  • Performing Arts Institute Presents “The Threepenny Opera”

posted by Alan Waclawski on July 31st, 2006 in Uncategorized Share This

For over 7 years, the PAI musical theater productions have attracted standing-room only audiences at the F.M. Kirby Center. This year the production will be performed at the Mellow Theater at Lackawanna College, which is easy to reach and has free parking available to patrons.

theater_threepenny.jpgThe Threepenny Opera is a deliciously dark satire about the underworld of foggy London town. Hailed as one of the greatest hits ever to shake up the world of musical theater, The Threepenny Opera is a parody of “respectable society” that thrusts the audience into the seedy underworld of Mack the Knife, a dapper criminal and his wry love affair with Polly Peachum. In their opera “By and For Beggars,” composer Kurt Weill (1900-1950) and playwright Bertolt Brecht (1898-1956) transformed saccharine, old-fashioned opera and operetta forms, incorporating a sharp political perspective and the sound of 1920s Berlin dance bands and cabaret. Weill’s acid harmonies and Brecht’s biting texts created a revolutionary new musical theater that inspired such subsequent hits as Cabaret, Chicago, and Urinetown. The show’s opening number, “Mack the Knife”, became one of the top popular songs of the century.
