Auditions for the “Rocky Horror Show,” Pennsylvania Theatre of Performance Arts’ Halloween production, will be held today at 1 p.m. at the theatre at 161 N. Laurel Street, Hazleton. A second round of auditions for the show will be held August 31 at 6:30 p.m. at The Strand in McAdoo, the venue for the performances.
“Rocky Horror Show,” a multi-generational classic, will be presented at The Strand, October 27 and 28 and Nov. 3 and 4, all shows at 10 p.m. Performances will be accompanied by a four-piece rock band.
PTPA’s new artistic director, Michael Marone, will conduct the auditions. Marone noted that anyone who wants to be in the show must sing but they do not have to prepare a song for the audition. Marone and PTPA accompanist, Joan Moyer, will teach a song at the beginning of auditions and then each singer will perform it. No previous acting experience is necessary and all roles are open.
Characters to be cast include the lead role of Frank ‘n Furter, a mad scientist who has created a male almost-human named Rocky; Riff Raff and Magenta, two servants in Frank ‘n Furter’s household; Eddie, one of the scientist’s failed experiments; Columbia, Eddie’s groupie; Brad and Janet, two “normal people” who have a flat tire in front of Frank ‘n Furter’s house and ask to use the phone; Dr. Scott, a professor who is Eddie’s uncle; a narrator, and an ensemble of both men and women. Because of the subject matter of the show, all participants must be at least 14 years of age.
“Rocky Horror Show” is a musical in the punk-rock genre that was made into a blockbuster movie and is still presented every weekend in many big cities and on college campuses. Rehearals for PTPA’s take on “Rocky Horror Show” will begin on September 9.
