“Marcinkus” Comes to The Old Brick

The Old Brick, Scranton’s newest theatre, is proud to present an encore production of the original, one man show, “Marcinkus”. Provocative, thought provoking and often times humorous, “Marcinkus” made its regional premiere in 2006 at the Arts YOUniverse. Written by local playwright and Scranton native Tom Flannery, directed by local theatre veteran Paul Winarski and starring perennial favorite Greg Korin, “Marcinkus” recounts the life and times of one of the most notorious figures in the history of the Catholic Church.

The play explores key moments in the history of Archbishop Paul Marcinkus, former president of the Vatican Bank during the turbulent 70’s and 80’s. Speaking from the grave from a kind of purgatory, Marcinkus looks back at his early days as a young priest in Chicago to his later life as one of the most influential men in Vatican City. The Archbishop was seen by many as the second most powerful man in church hierarchy from 1971 to 1989. He was frequently seen accompanying several Popes, including his much publicized friendship with Pope John Paul II. His close association with Pope John Paul I even became fodder for wild theories regarding his possible involvement in the Pope’s death. Even Hollywood could not resist alluding to Marcinkus’ infamy in Francis Ford Coppola’s classic film “The Godfather III”. Allegations of possible mob connections, arms smuggling and trafficking of gold and counterfeit currencies also figure into the amazing story of a simple parish priest who became the center of one of the biggest scandals of the Catholic Church.

Don’t miss the chance to explore this fascinating character! Show dates are Feb 2nd, 3rd, 9th & 10th at 8:00 p.m. Tickets are $10.00 and can be purchased by calling #347-3713. The Old Brick Theatre is located at Rear 126 East Market Street, Scranton, PA. Free hot and cold hors d’ouvres after the show at Stirna’s Restaurant next door.
