The Chenango River Theatre, the Binghamton area’s newest professional non-profit theater company will hold local auditions for both The Foreigner and True West on Monday June 11, 2007 at the new theater at 1 Cherry Lane, Greene, NY

Auditions are for both Equity and non-equity actors with all actors compensated for their work. Equity actors are paid under the guidelines of Chenango River Theatre’s Small Professional Theatre (SPT Level 2) contract with Actors’ Equity, the union for professional actors and stage managers. Non-equity actors receive a fee.

Actors will need a monologue of not more than two minutes in length from a contemporary American play from 1950 or later. In addition, actors may be asked to read from the plays. Scripts may be available in advance by calling the theater. Actors should bring a resume/head shot to the auditions.

The Foreigner, goes into rehearsal July 17 and opens Aug. 3. True West goes into rehearsal September 28. Rehearsals are anticipated to be five to six days a week, primarily evenings and weekends.

Roles available for The Foreigner are:

    • Charlie: 40’s, English, quiet, shy, almost forlorn and lost. Been a proofreader for 27 years; his “dying” wife finds him boring.
    • Froggy: late 30’s to 40’s, British demolitions expert, jovial, friendly outgoing sort.
    • Betty: late 60’s or older, southern, sweet, naive, and intrigued by all things foreign but still independent, trusting and resourceful; wise about some things, naïve about others.
    • David: late 20s-30s, friendly, open countenance, humorous and friendly evangelist without being pushy.
    • Catherine: attractive, young woman in her 20s, David’s fiancée, quite southern but also independent with a ready wit.
    • Owen: late 20’s to 40’s, a dank and foreboding southern redneck, out to get his. Cruel and superstitious with a mean streak.
    • Ellard: a lumpy, overgrown backward youth in his late teens, just as nice as a good day but may be a bit slow.

Roles available for True West are:

    • Austin: 30’s, a squeaky clean Ivy League graduate who works as a screenwriter, with a wife & kids; neat & organized; the logical, calm brother on the surface, underneath his genetic makeup may not be that different from his brother Lee
    • Lee: Austin’s older brother, a beer-swilling desert rat and petty thief who has come to their mother’s house to loot the neighbors of household appliances, the opposite of his brother in looks, sensibility, and degree of success
    • Saul: 40’s to 50’s, a slick Hollywood producer, as sincere as anyone who is motivated only by profit can be
    • Mom: early 60s, conservative, totally out of touch with her two sons, and not to much in touch with reality, still lost in the world in which she raised them
