  • Concert Goers “Give Back” Making Food Drive a Success

posted by Alan Waclawski on December 5th, 2007 in News Share This

The Sherman Theater, in conjunction with Strangers helping Strangers and the performing group Railroad Earth, donated approximately 800 pounds of canned and non-perishable goods to Fitzmaurice Community Services after collecting the food during a drive held at Railroad Earth’s Thanksgiving weekend performance.

“By accepting this generous donation of food we are able to assist the residents who receive our services and free up food pantry’s and food banks for other needy individuals within the county,” said Deb Scocozza, Executive Vice President of Fitzmaurice Community Services. “It also allows them to pay other expenses, such as heating costs or utility bills.”

The drive was facilitated by the nonprofit organization Strangers Helping Strangers (SHS). SHS is a nonprofit organization of music fans dedicated to holding food drives at concerts throughout the nation, benefiting those in need in each community an event is held.

“We were delighted that we had the opportunity to help collect these food products and direct them locally,” said Sherman Executive Director Richard W. Berkowitz. “The Sherman has worked continually to be an important part of the community, utilizing its strong draw to help commercial and nonprofit entities in our region.”

Fitzmaurice Community Services is a nonprofit organization whose initial and primary function was to develop and operate community based residential programs designed to provide habilitation to individuals with mental health and developmental disabilities, making it possible for individuals to live productive lives in their community. Now Fitzmaurice also operates West Hills Housing Apartment Complex for homeless individuals.

The West Hills program currently serves 11 families. All of these families were homeless prior to admission and have continued to struggle financially to catch up and to meet their current needs. The supported living program assists 59 families within the community that live independently and are also on fixed incomes.
