kulu4The Sherman Theater, located in downtown Stroudsburg, will host the African American dance ensemble Kulu Mele on February 10 as part of its Fine Arts Discovery Series programming and in celebration of Black History Month.

Since its creation three decades ago, Kulu Mele African American Dance Ensemble has established a national reputation as a unique and dynamic performing company. The longest-lived African Dance company in Philadelphia, Kulu Mele has built a repertoire that is an exciting blend of West African ancestral tradition and African American creativity.

Performances include music and dance of Nigeria, Ghana, Guinea, Senegal, Brazil, Haiti, Cuba and African America. A force behind a vital African cultural renaissance in Philadelphia, the Ensemble teaches and performs both new and traditional works. All dances are authentically costumed and choreographed to convey not only artistic excellence but also the meanings of dancing and drumming in the African societies from which these traditions come.

Tickets for this performance are $12 for children 12 and under and $14 for adults. The show begins at 2 p.m. A $5 interactive workshop is available before the performance and will begin at 1 p.m.

Kulu3In the workshop children will design a traditional African tribal mask with beads, feathers, ribbon, and bright face paint. During the show the workshop participants will present their masks on stage. Workshop space is limited so reservations are highly recommended. One parent must accompany their children during the workshop.

The Sherman Theater’s Fine Arts Discovery Series features programs designed to be fun, educational, and affordable for Pocono area families. The series will also feature Mock Turtle’s Marionette Theater on April 20.

Tickets for these shows and workshops are available now at shermantheater.com or by calling the theater box office at 570.420.2808.
