Little Theatre Changes Schedule, Announces Auditions for Barry Manilow’s COPCABANA
Due to circumstances beyond their control, Little Theatre of Wilkes-Barre must make a change to the schedule for the remainder of their 2007-2008 season.
Annie has been removed from the schedule and Barry Manilow’s Copacabana will be performed as the spring production. Production dates for Copacabana will be April 12, 18 and 19 at 8:00 PM and April 13 and 20 at 3:00 PM.
Director Cathy Alaimo will hold auditions for Copacabana February 17 and 18 from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM. Auditioners age 16 and up will be asked to sing a song of their choosing, dance and read from the script. All roles are open and include:
- Tony/Stephen – young struggling song writer (20-30)
- Lola/Samantha – young with ambitions of becoming a star (20-30)
- Gladys – cheeky cigarette girl, one time Copa girl (mid 30’s-50)
- Sam Silver – gruff but kind manager of the Copacabana (40’s-60’s)
- Rico – elegant but dangerous manager of rival club (mid 30’s-mid 40’s)
- Conchita – Latin bombshell and Rico’s girl (mid 30’s-mid 40’s)
- Large chorus who will double in multiple roles including show girls, show boys, gangsters, cops, etc.
A love letter to the Technicolor® musicals of the 1940s, Barry Manilow’s Copacabana presents the story of Lola as told through the eyes of Stephen, a present day aspiring songwriter whose imagination takes him back to a time when “music and passion were always in fashion.”
He dreams up Lola, fresh off the plane from Tulsa, who arrives in New York with show-biz aspirations. Tony (who looks amazingly like Stephen!) is a bartender/composer who falls in love with Lola and helps her become a Copa girl. While performing, Lola attracts the amorous attentions of Rico (who wears a diamond). Rico abducts Lola and takes her to his rival nightclub in Havana. Tony, with the help of his Copacabana friends, must now rescue Lola before… well, even if you know the song, there are still a few surprises!
