Love is in the air as Worthington Players presents LOVE LETTERS, opening Friday February 8 and continuing through February 17 2008, at the Shawnee Playhouse.
Over a lifetime, letters are exchanged between two people who grew up together, went their separate ways, but continue to share confidences. They carry on a friendship across 50 years of correspondence—at college, then through their travels, careers, and relationships. As the actors read the letters aloud, they create an evocative, touching, frequently funny but always telling portrait in which what is implied is as meaningful as what is revealed.
“The magic in Mr. Gurney’s wonderful little play springs from its simple, understated format,” says director Jerry Durkin. “The two characters sit on a mostly empty stage and read the letters that they have written to each other over a lifetime. Doesn’t sound very captivating, does it? But I have never failed to see the audience drawn quickly and completely into the play, dying to see what is going to happen to these two special people. Every pair of actors performs it differently, and yet the play never fails to deliver its beautiful message. We hope that you can join us for this terrific evening of theatre, perfect for the season of valentines.”
In the age of text-messages, e-mails, and cell phones, LOVE LETTERS is a reminder of the intimate and old-fashioned art of letter writing. This unique and imaginative theatre piece by A.R. Gurney was nominated for the 1990 Pulitzer Prize for Drama.
This production of LOVE LETTERS take full advantage of the wealth of acting talent in the Poconos. Each performance will feature a different pair of actors, making the show brand new every time.
