The Music Box Repertory Company will present Meredith Willson’s great American
musical: THE MUSIC MAN, July 18 to 20, 24 to 27, July 31, and August 1 to 3 at the Music Box Dinner Playhouse, 196 Hughes Street, Swoyersville, PA 18704.
THE MUSIC MAN is an affectionate tribute to “Smalltown USA” at the beginning of the last century. The musical follows fast talking traveling salesman Harold Hill as he cons the people of River City, Iowa into buying instruments and uniforms for a kid’s band he vows to organize- even though he doesn’t know a trombone from a bassoon. His plans to skip town with the cash are foiled when he falls madly in love with Marion the librarian, who transforms him into a respectable citizen by curtain’s fall.
THE MUSIC MAN won the Tony Award for best musical in 1957 and went on to be a very popular movie starring Robert Preston and Shirley Jones. The songs: “Seventy Six
Trombones”, “Good Night, My Someone”, and “Till There Was You” became hit songs.
The cast of THE MUSIC MAN at the Music Box includes Ron Araya as Professor Harold Hill, Marcelle McGuirk as Marion, Dorrance Daniels as Mayor Shinn, Cate McDonald plays his wife, Eulalie; Marcellus is played by Jimmy Williams, Amanda Reese plays Mrs. Paroo, Zaneeta Shinn is played by Emily Thomas, Tommy Djilas is played by Scott Ashford, and 8 year old Sam Sweitzer plays Winthrop Paroo.
