Sparks & Feathers - A Midsummer Masquerade

July 6, 2008 · Print This Article

Each year, the Mayor and his wife Donna choose a not for profit arts group and host a party. This year, in part because The Northeast Theatre is changing its name, they chose Electric Theatre Company. And the folks at the Theatre have taken the Mayor’s choice as both as an occaision to honor him, and a challenge to themselves; they aim to make it the best party Scranton has seen in years. The name of the event is Sparks & Feathers! and it is described as A Midsummer Masquerade. Those attending are required to dress in black and white, but are thereby encouraged to interpret that dress code in whatever way their whim may take them, from donning formal wear to black jeans and t-shirts. (Prizes will be awarded to the most imaginative interpretations.) Each partier will receive an elaborate mask covered with sequins and feathers to help move the evening into high gear. There will be food, entertainment, and dancing. The party starts at six on July 19th at the Electric Theatre Company, 326 Spruce Street on the second floor in Downtown Scranton.

SF1 fullVida Tapas Bar and Lounge on Washington Avenue is providing the buffet and beverage. Walk-in music will set an elegant tone with Trio Barocco, an ensemble of violin, cello, and flute from Tunkhannock. The music will get hot with Cuban Tres as these three young women from the beautiful isle play lute, piano, clarinet, and guitar to accompany their singing of Cuban songs, traditional, folk, and original. The music continues as Conor McGuigan, NEPA’s champion deejay, flips vinyls in an eclectic mix of thoroughly danceable tunes. Throughout the evening, red nose clowns, acrobats, buskers, and zannies keep the party full of surprise.

Tickets to Sparks & Feathers! A Midsummer Masquerade are $50 in advance and $60 at the door. Student Rush tickets of $20 (for students of 25 or under) will be available as space allows beginning at 6:45, with the Rush List accepting names from 5:30. The party starts on July 19 at six, the Electric Theatre, 326 Spruce Street on the second floor, Downtown Scranton.
