The sounds of Broadway come to the historic Sherman Theater on August 2, with a presentation of Jason Robert Brown’s Songs For A New World performed by Black Sheep Productions.
The Tony-Award winning composer has exquisitely crafted a musical that chronicles the wonder, excitement, and anxiety associated with discovery. With a small, passionate cast and a driving, intense accompaniment, Songs For A New World is about that one moment - or rather, those isolated moments in the lives of many characters - in a variety of eras. These story songs are heartwarming, thought-provoking and uplifting.
“It’s about one moment. It’s about hitting the wall and having to make a choice, or take a stand, or turn around and go back,” said Brown of his two act revue. As a composer, Brown is considered by many to be the future of American musical theater.
Brown transports his audience from the deck of a 1492 Spanish sailing ship to a ledge 57 stories above Fifth Avenue to meet a startling array of characters. They range from a young man who has determined that basketball is his ticket out of the ghetto to a woman whose dream of marrying rich nabs her the man of her dreams and a soulless marriage. These are the stories and characters of today, the Songs For A New World.
This event is Produced by the Sherman Theater and presented by Black Sheep Productions. Over the course of the next year, Black Sheep will present Theater for Young Audiences as well as providing other exciting theatrical experiences for the Pocono community.
